Prominent Nigerian journalist Dele Momodu has openly criticised Doyin Okupe, a former Labour Party chieftain, for his alleged support of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a recent post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Momodu expressed his disappointment with Okupe for defending the government’s policies, which he claims have exacerbated the hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly amidst the ongoing food inflation crisis.
According to Momodu, Okupe has a history of engaging in sophistry, dating back to his time as the spokesperson for former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Momodu accused Okupe of consistently supporting various Nigerian governments without any tangible results to show for it.
He argued that Nigerians have never experienced such severe difficulties, yet Okupe continues to defend what he describes as a wasteful government with indefensible economic policies.
The journalist emphasised that a government should not rely solely on theoretical economic indicators. Instead, he argued, governance should be balanced with practical and real-world economic measures.
Momodu suggested that the government needs to make significant sacrifices, reduce reckless spending, and focus on tangible economic improvements.
He further stated that he would personally support President Tinubu if he managed to cut government spending, initiate an agricultural revolution, and empower the youth with vocational grants rather than distributing cash to politicians.
Momodu’s critique highlights the importance of practical governance and the detrimental effects of blind allegiance to government policies.
He stressed that with advisers like Okupe, whom he believes defend government policies without question, no administration can succeed.
Part of Dele Momodu’s tweet reads, “The people of Nigeria have never had things so bad, and you’re both defending a profligate government with untenable economic hocus pocus.
“I will personally carry Tinubu on my head if he’s able to cut the reckless spending of his government, make palpable sacrifices, ignite agricultural revolution, empower our brilliant and energetic youths with vocational grants instead of distributing cash to phantom politicians, etc.
“But with advisers like you, no government can succeed.”….Seē _ Morē
