As reported by the Daily Post, on July 18, 2024, Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, survived an assassination attempt in Benin City. While traveling on Airport Road with Sen. Monday Okpebholo, the APC governorship candidate, gunmen opened fire on their convoy. “I’m grateful to be alive,” Shaibu stated, emphasizing the dangerous political climate.
The attack came just a day after a court ruled in Shaibu’s favor regarding his reinstatement. “This incident highlights the tension in Edo State as we approach the elections,” he remarked. Shaibu had previously contested the governorship election as the PDP candidate but was not recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
A spokesperson for the Edo State government condemned the violence, stating, “We must ensure the safety of our politicians and the public.” The Edo State Security Network, linked to the attack, has been accused of various political and criminal activities.
As the September 2024 governorship election approaches, concerns about political violence are rising. “We are on high alert,” a police officer said, stressing the need to prevent further attacks.
In response, security measures around Shaibu’s residence have been increased. “We are taking this threat seriously,” Shaibu confirmed, adding that the police are investigating the incident. The attack has underscored the urgent need for enhanced security for public officials during the election season….Seē _ Morē
