Samuel Nwanosike, the former chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, has spoken out about the challenges he faces due to his backing for local government autonomy.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV’s The Morning Show programme, Nwanosike stated that because he dared to advocate for the independence of local governments, he is being penalised.
Nwanosike alleges that his financial allocations are being withheld and that he is being subjected to threats from multiple directions.
Nwanosike underscored the significance of upholding the rule of law, respecting the constitution, and advancing democracy in Nigeria.
He emphasised that these principles are critical for effective governance and the nation’s development.
Nwanosike noted that his advocacy for local government autonomy stems from a deep belief in the need for decentralised governance to ensure that local administrations can operate efficiently and meet the needs of their communities without undue interference.
He expressed disappointment that his efforts to promote these ideals have led to punitive measures against him.
However, Nwanosike affirmed that he would not be deterred by these challenges and would continue to fight for what he believes is right.
Furthermore, Nwanosike highlighted his achievements as the local government chairman, pointing out that he has successfully completed numerous projects across all 13 wards of Ikwerre.
These projects, he said, are a testament to his dedication to the development and welfare of his constituents.
He cited various infrastructure developments, including the construction of roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, as evidence of his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of the people in Ikwerre.
Nwanosike stressed that, despite the difficulties he faces, his focus remains on delivering tangible benefits to his community.
Nwanosike said, “I am being punished; my allocation is being seized; I am being threatened left and right.
“But it is not a problem; we believe in democracy. What is the rule of law, obedience to the constitution, and making sure that democracy is deepened.
“And I stand as a signboard to say I have delivered for my people as a local government chairman; I have done projects in all my 13 wards.”….Seë _ Morë
