In a recent interview shared by Arise News, National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mohammed Haruna, addressed growing concerns over the state of Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the programme, Haruna noted that while political competition is essential to democracy, instability within opposition parties could pose broader challenges to the electoral process. He stressed that internal crises, leadership disputes, and lack of cohesion among parties may weaken their ability to effectively participate in elections.
“If the opposition is in disarray, then there is a problem, but I don’t know if INEC should be blamed for that,” he stated.
Haruna explained that the commission’s role is strictly guided by the constitution and electoral laws, adding that INEC does not interfere in the internal affairs of political parties. According to him, many of the issues affecting opposition parties stem from internal disagreements, particularly during primary elections and leadership transitions.
He further emphasized that political parties must take responsibility for strengthening their internal structures and resolving disputes through established legal and democratic channels. Haruna also reiterated INEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, noting that the commission continues to improve its systems and processes ahead of 2027.
He called on stakeholders, including civil society and party members, to pay closer attention to internal party governance…..See More
