According to the report from the Vanguard, In a recent development, a Federal High Court in Kano has made a significant ruling regarding the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. The court nullified his reappointment, sparking contention between different parties involved.
Following the court ruling, the Kano State government promptly responded, asserting that Mohammad Sanusi remains the rightful 16th Emir of Kano. The government also proceeded to request Ado Bayero to vacate the Gidan Nassarawa mini palace for demolition.
Alhaji Aminu Babba-Dan’agundi, also known as Sarkin Dawaki Babba, sought legal action by filing a motion on May 23 to prevent the Kano State government from implementing the Kano State Emirate (Repeal) Law 2024. This law had initially led to the establishment of five emirates, consequently impacting the emirate status of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.
Mounting dissatisfaction with the situation, Babba-Dangundi took the matter to court with a plea to reverse the removal of Bayero. The respondents in this case include the Kano State Government, Kano State House of Assembly, Speaker, Attorney-General of Kano State, Commissioner of Police in Kano, Inspector General of Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Department of State Security Service.
During the judgment, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad-Liman invalidated all actions taken by the state government in response to the Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024. He emphasized that the actions were null and void, even though the law itself remains valid. The judge instructed all parties to maintain the status quo ante and expressed concern over non-compliance with court orders.
Justice Muhammad-Liman further granted the respondent’s request for a stay of proceedings until the matter is resolved at the Court of Appeal. The case has been transferred to Justice Simon Amobeda of Federal High Court 3 for further proceedings.
The legal counsel to the applicant, M. S. Waziri, had urged the court previously to nullify the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law 2024, setting the stage for the legal battle that has unfolded.
