The Sun reports that Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s candidate for governor of Lagos State in the 2023 general election, has called for a more equitable and inclusive Lagos, one that recognises and appreciates the unique contributions of every citizen, irrespective of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin.
He said that the present government does not live up to Lagos’s potential and views the city as nothing more than an extension of other South West states.
He was hopeful that the city’s elders and residents would work together to restore Lagos’ independence and legacy of peace, and he stressed the importance of this.
Antagonising various ethnic and tribal groupings does not reflect Lagos’s spirit, he stated. That is not how Lagosians are. The commercial and residential properties of approximately 75% of Nigeria’s top 2,000 wealthiest individuals are located in Lagos. The core of Lagos is that everyone feels safe there. Ogun State is home to the present governor. A king of Ogun State is the father of the present deputy governor.
Those in power in Lagos now are clearly not committed to honouring that heritage; as a result, they handle the city as though it were a conquered state or a commonwealth in the South West. No way!
