According to Punch, a group of 27 members from the Rivers State House of Assembly who support Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, have strongly objected to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s proposal to appoint caretaker committees for the state’s 23 local government areas. According to Pro-Wike Speaker Martin Amaewhule, “We will reject any caretaker appointments as they go against the constitution.”
Amaewhule emphasized the importance of democratically elected local government officials, stating, “Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution mandates that local government officials should be democratically elected. Using caretaker committees is not in line with this.” With the current local government chairmen’s terms ending on June 17, 2024, he added, “We will not approve any caretaker committee nominations put forward by the governor.”
At the same time, ‘The Supreme Council for Sim, World-Wide,’ a socio-political group, has urged Governor Fubara to promptly submit nominations for caretaker committees to the Assembly. Co-National Chairman Oji Ngofa criticized the attempt by current local government chairmen to extend their tenure through a recent Assembly amendment, describing it as unlawful.
In other developments, the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt has instructed all parties involved in the ongoing House of Assembly crisis to maintain the current situation until July 20. This follows a legal challenge aimed at overturning an earlier injunction that allowed Victor Oko-Jumbo to remain as Assembly leader. The court emphasized, “No actions should be taken that could affect the outcome of this case.”..……..See More
