The Director and Proprietor of Dar Ibn Taimiyyah Islamic Home School, Isa Okonkwo reacting to the claims that Igbo Muslims adopt Islam primarily for economic benefits has alleged that there is the stark absence of Igbo Muslims among Nigeria’s elite, contrasting their status with the significant influence wielded by non-Igbo Muslims.
He highlighted the success and prominence of Muslims in the North and South West regions, noting their substantial achievements and societal contributions. He conveyed a sense of exclusion and the struggle for recognition and success by Igbo Muslims within the Nigerian socio-economic landscape.
He said in an interview with Punch, ”You rarely find Igbo Muslims among the elite, non-Igbo Muslims are highly influential. They are in the North and Yoruba land and are doing very well. Besides the late Alhaji Abdulaziz (Ude), who was already a multi-millionaire before converting to Islam, can you name as many non-Muslim Igbo millionaires or billionaires? It’s a far-fetched claim.
