The Coalition of Indigenous Ethnic Nationalities (CIEN) has written to President Bola Tinubu, proposing the division of Nigeria into eight geo-political regions with approximate interim boundaries. According to Dr. Akin Fapohunda, a chieftain of Afenifere and representative of CIEN, the proposed regions aim to address the country’s diversity and promote regional autonomy.
“The southern region will comprise Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, and Cross Rivers States, with optional inclusions of other ethnic groups,” Fapohunda explained. “The South Eastern region will consist of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States, while the Western region will comprise Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, and Ekiti States, among others.”
As reported by The Guardian, CIEN also proposed increasing the number of states from 36 to 55, with the creation of 18 new states as recommended by the 2014 National Conference. Additionally, they suggested a six-year rotational presidency, with a non-renewable tenure and a collegial executive council.
“The rotation of leadership between regions shall be two years for Prime Minister and Ceremonial President within the six years period,” Fapohunda stated. “This will ensure that all zones have a turn in leadership, promoting unity and inclusivity.”..…….See More
