The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied rumors of plans to revoke the licenses of Fidelity, Wema, Polaris and Unity Banks.
According to the Director of the Corporate Communications Department, Mrs Hakama Sidi Ali, on Monday, made this clarification in a statement.
She reassured the public of the banking system’s resilience and the safety of deposits. The announcement came in response to a circulating rumor suggesting that the CBN had dissolved the boards of these banks.
Recall that a circular made the round on Monday suggesting that the apex bank has dissolved the boards of the three banks after recently revoking the license of Heritage Bank.
However, the apex bank spokesperson described the claim as false.
She also noted that a circular issued by CBN on January 10, 2024, notifying the public about the dissolution of the Boards of Union, Keystone, and Polaris Banks, was being re-circulated as though it was issued on June 10, 2024.
According to the Vanguard,she blamed mischievous people for the action aimed at creating panic in the system,emphasing that the defunct Heritage Bank was an isolated case but customers of Heritage Bank needn’t worry about the safety of their deposits, adding that the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) had commenced payment of the bank’s insured deposits.
She urged the public to continue their regular banking activities without concern, dismissing any false reports regarding the health of specific Deposit Money Banks.
