The Catholic Church has a list of serious sins called the seven deadly sins. These sins are also known as the seven capital or cardinal sins. They are called deadly because they lead to many other sins that harm our souls.
Sin doesn’t just stop; it grows and spreads. Sin can weaken our souls, making it harder for us to resist doing bad things.
These sins are linked to virtues they oppose or to the main sins recognized by Christian leaders like St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They’re called “capital” sins because they lead to other sins.
Here are the seven deadly sins:
1. Pride: Thinking too highly of ourselves and refusing to accept God’s mercy.
2. Avarice (Greed): Wanting more and more wealth and possessions, forgetting about God.
3. Envy: Feeling unhappy because of someone else’s success or possessions.
“Being angry can lead to trouble. Stop being angry before it leads to sin.” – Psalm 37:8
4. Lust: Lust is a strong desire for sexual pleasure, seeking pleasure just for its own sake. It makes us see others as objects, not as people to respect and care for.
“Lust for things in this world is not from God.” – 1 John 2:16
5. Gluttony: Gluttony is wanting too much food, not just enjoying it. It harms us spiritually and physically, making us forget to help others.
“Don’t drink too much wine or eat too much food, or you’ll end up poor.” – Proverbs 23:19-21
“Moderation helps us avoid overdoing things like eating, drinking, or using substances.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church.
6. Sloth: Sloth, as Saint Thomas Aquinas explained, is feeling sad about spiritual things, not just being lazy. It means not wanting to keep doing good things, especially for our spiritual growth.
Sloth is when we don’t feel happy about the good things God gives us. It’s like pushing away the happiness that comes from God.
In the Bible, Proverbs 13:4 says lazy people always want more but never get it, while hardworking people are satisfied.
If we want to be good, we have to work for it. We need to pray and make sacrifices…..See More
