Quarzazate Solar Power Station is a solar power complex located in the Draa-Tatilalet region. This area is the hottest region with annual sunshine of more than 320 days. At 868 MW, it is the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant and it is being expanded yearly as the kingdom’s target to energize the whole country with renewable energy.
The auxiliary diesel fuel system is used to maintain the minimal temperature of the heat transfer fluid when the sun does not shine to synchronize the turbine and burn the chemicals used to store energy in the form of molten salt to be used at night. It covers an area of 2,500 hectares in the Sahara desert and receives more than 320 days of sunshine per year.
Phase two of the project is more complex, mirrors were mounted horizontally on platforms that follow the light, reflecting it to a 250-meter tall solar tower. This single project covers an area of 550 hectares. It uses the solar tower to present a technological variation of CSP. The energy stored can power 7 million homes.
Water is used for cooling, as well as to clean regularly the reflectors and solar panels. The project has employed more than 1,000 permanently and employs thousands of others indirectly. It has helped offset 24,000 tonnes of carbon monoxide emissions per year and helped fight against global warming. Morocco is on its part towards energy independence and sustainable development.
