When a prominent statesman or lady passes away, they are given the honor of a state funeral as a token of their gratitude. The ceremony is usually held in front of an audience, and it is not given out to just anyone.
Military processions and gun salutes are frequently part of a state burial to honour the passage of a person’s life.
In India, however, a well-known dog named Zanjeer was granted the uncommon honor of witnessing firsthand what it means for a federal government to conduct a state funeral. I became curious as I learned more about the dog and wanted to know what the dog had done to deserve such special attention.
The dog was a retired police dog from the Indian police force, indicating that it had a successful career as a police dog.
The dog had been a long-time member of the Indian police force and was adored by many officers. When the dog reached retirement age, she was expected to sit and enjoy the rest of her life.
In celebration of its lifelong achievements, the dog was given such a high award. A Pakistani terrorist cell attacked the city of Mumbai on October 26, 2008, killing a huge number of people. The assailants intended to detonate each bomb one at a time, causing massive deaths around the city. The first had already exploded, killing nearly 500 people, with more on the way.
This was the point at which Zanjeer’s importance to Mumbai citizens became clear. Thousands of lives were saved as a result of his discovery of more devices in various locations. After successfully performing this huge task, the dog became a national hero in India and a household name across the country.
