A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and convener of the Alternative Movement, Segun Sowunmi, has provided an assessment of the structural dynamics within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting what he described as the party’s foundational power blocs.
Speaking during an interview on The Volume Podcast aired on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Sowunmi outlined the political framework sustaining the APC, linking it to the influence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“And so when I look at the APC now, at this stage in their life, I pity them,” he said. “Because the only thing that will sustain that party is for them to understand that that party is built on two axes,” he added. He explained further, “The Bola Ahmed Tinubu axis, which represents the southern flank, and the Muhammadu Buhari axis, which represents the northern flank.”
Sowunmi noted the shift in political leadership between the two blocs, stating, “The northern flank of the Muhammadu Buhari axis has ruled the country for eight years. Now it has gone to the southern plans of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
He advised that continued collaboration between both blocs would be critical for political stability within the party. “They would do themselves, the northern flank of Buhari would do itself a lot of favor to work doubly hard to push him into a second term because that favor will be returned again,” he said. “That’s the paradigm for them,” he added.
Turning to his party, Sowunmi contrasted the APC’s structure with that of the PDP, emphasizing what he described as its collective ownership model. “As for us, the PDP, we are more like a political party that cannot be owned by anybody,” he stated.
He warned against attempts at centralized control within the PDP, saying, “Every attempt for one individual to fully own the PDP, he ends up losing the PDP.”
Reflecting on past political developments, Sowunmi added, “PDP was designed as a political party of everybody owning a little part of it. And once Jonathan came, when he won and his people started acting like they wanted to own everything, they lost everything.” He concluded, “Now we are here now.”……See More
