Yunusa Tanko, a Nigerian politician and social activist, who served as Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in 2015, during an interview with Symfoni correspondent spoke against the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
When he was told that there had been a time he argued that Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s attempt at creating a one-party state would fail, and that recent developments—such as over 30 governors aligning with one side, a massive majority in the National Assembly, and collapsing party structures—suggested the country might already be moving toward a one-party system, he responded that he still maintained it would not happen because it was not democratic.
He stated that the people who had nurtured the nation’s democracy would not allow such a development, and that even the citizens themselves would resist it. He added that this resistance was already beginning to manifest, noting that many individuals who had previously been silenced were now regrouping and forming opposition through other political parties.
He further explained that although about 22 out of the 36 governors currently belonged to one political party, it did not necessarily indicate genuine loyalty, as many of them were motivated by personal gain. He asserted that some of those governors were not fully aligned with the government, and that this reality was already becoming evident.
He also said that the situation was gradually turning into a contest between the people and the government.
He said, “Do you hear what is going on recently? People in government are being told to be careful when they go out to campaign. They should wear helmets because the people are ready to throw stones at them. There may be a rain of stones because the people are tired.
“They are tired. They are hungry. They cannot continue with this kind of pressure.
“But these same people who are tired and hungry have also, over time, been weaponized. Some of them, for 1,000 naira or 2,000 naira, can sell their votes.”…..See More
