According to a report by CBS News on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Former US National Security Adviser John Bolton has criticised the decision to send Vice President JD Vance to lead negotiations with Iran, warning that such a move could weaken the United States’ position in the talks.
Bolton argued that allowing a senior figure like the vice president to take charge of the delegation risks giving the opposing side an advantage. “It’s a mistake to send the vice president. You don’t let your adversary pick your negotiation team,” he said.
He suggested that Iran may view Vance as a more flexible negotiator, which could influence the dynamics of the discussions. Bolton added that the approach signals an urgent attempt by the administration to bring the conflict to a close.
“Trump wants a way out — and Vance will try to find it,” he stated, referring to ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the president of the United States.
Bolton also expressed the view that the situation is approaching a critical point, suggesting that Washington may be seeking a quick resolution. “Given Trump’s panic, we’re very likely at the end of it,” he said.
He further claimed that the administration’s priority appears to be declaring success rather than pursuing a prolonged strategy. “He just wants to declare victory — and move on to something else,” Bolton added.
According to him, the direction of the conflict now largely depends on Iran’s next steps. He noted that a significant escalation from Tehran could alter the course of events.
“It would take a major mistake by Iran to force his hand,” Bolton said.
His comments come as diplomatic efforts continue, with high-level talks expected to shape the next phase of relations between Washington and Tehran…..See More
