Amaechi Reveals How BAT Appointed Somebody Who’s A Lawyer Because He Did Not Want A Bad Name

Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has criticised Nigeria’s electoral leadership and raised concerns over the state of democracy under the current administration.

In a recent video on SYMFONI TV, speaking at a political gathering that drew several prominent opposition figures, Amaechi questioned decisions made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly regarding appointments within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Referring to the appointment of the current INEC chairman, Amaechi stated, “President Tinubu went and appointed somebody who is a lawyer. Unfortunately, he’s a lawyer like me and he did not want a bad name.” The remark, delivered during his speech, suggested dissatisfaction with the leadership and implied concerns about maintaining professional integrity in public office.

Amaechi compared the present electoral system with that of 2015, praising former INEC chairman Attahiru Jega for what he described as credible leadership. He argued that the current commission has failed to inspire similar public confidence, alleging that actions taken by authorities are weakening democratic structures.

The former minister also touched on broader governance issues, including economic hardship and rising living costs, which he said are affecting ordinary Nigerians. He warned that such conditions could further erode trust in government if not urgently addressed.

The event was attended by key political figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, signalling possible opposition alignment ahead of future elections.
