In a recent interview on TV Platinum, political activist Omoyele Sowore discussed concerns over what he described as the growing influence of political dynasties in Nigeria and the concentration of power among elite families.
During the interview, Sowore stated, “People want Seyi Tinubu as Lagos governor while his father runs as Nigeria’s governor-general.” He used the statement while referring to Bola Ahmed Tinubu and criticizing what he believes is an emerging trend where political offices are increasingly being positioned within the same family circles.
Sowore explained that such developments suggest a dangerous shift toward hereditary-style politics, where leadership opportunities may become concentrated among relatives of powerful officeholders rather than being open to the broader public. According to him, this could weaken democratic values and undermine merit-based leadership selection.
He further noted that the continued dominance of political families in governance may discourage capable individuals from pursuing public office, stressing that democracy should provide equal opportunity for all citizens regardless of family background or political connections.
The activist also emphasized that Nigerians must remain vigilant against any political structure that encourages dynastic control, arguing that leadership should be determined by competence, public trust, and accountability rather than inherited influence.
Sowore concluded by urging citizens to actively defend democratic principles and reject any attempt to transform public office into a family inheritance, maintaining that national progress depends on fairness, transparency, and equal political participation for all Nigerians…..See More
