According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, April 2, 2026, anger has erupted in France following remarks by United States President Donald Trump about French leader Emmanuel Macron and his wife.
The controversy began after Trump mocked Macron during a private lunch on Wednesday. He imitated a French accent and claimed that Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly.”
In a video that surfaced online, Trump said, “I call up France, Macron — whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from the right to the jaw.”
The remarks quickly drew criticism from French politicians across party lines. Many described the comments as inappropriate, especially at a time of global tension.
Speaker of the French lower house, Yael Braun-Pivet, expressed disappointment. “Honestly, it’s not up to par,” she said. She went on to add that when the world is discussing major issues, they have a president who is busy mocking and laughing others. Despite being a critic of Macron, Manuel Bompard also defended him.
“You are aware of the extent of my disagreements with the president, but for Donald Trump to speak to him like that… I find that absolutely unacceptable,” he said.
The remarks were linked to an old viral video involving Macron and his wife, which the French president had earlier dismissed as misinformation.
