According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, a Nigerian entrepreneur, Titilayo Ibrahim, has recounted a frightening experience where she was nearly imprisoned after being mistakenly linked to a kidnapping case involving a ₦50 million ransom.
In a recent interview with BBC Yoruba, shared on Facebook, she revealed how a simple business interaction unexpectedly turned into a legal nightmare.
According to her account, an ordinary sales transaction became the catalyst for her arrest and subsequent accusation.
The ordeal began on October 16, 2025, when Ibrahim received a call on her business line from a woman interested in purchasing nightwear.
The caller requested two items and explained that she was using her husband’s phone because her own was not working.
After selecting her items, the woman inquired about a convenient pickup location, to which Ibrahim suggested the estate junction. At this point, the transaction appeared routine and unremarkable.
However, when the customer arrived at the designated location, the situation quickly escalated. Ibrahim was approached by two men who identified themselves as police officers.
Without warning, they detained her on suspicion of involvement in a serious criminal case.
The officers accused her of using a SIM card connected to both kidnapping and murder, which immediately put her freedom in jeopardy.
Ibrahim described how she attempted to clarify the situation to the officers, insisting that the SIM card in question was recently purchased and had been used exclusively for her MiFi device.
Despite her explanations, the officers maintained that she was already under surveillance, and that the number had been implicated in a major criminal act.
According to their account, the SIM had been used to demand a ₦50 million ransom and was connected to a case where the victim was ultimately killed.
The businesswoman expressed shock at the severity of the accusations, she maintained that there was no connection between her and the crime, emphasizing the ordinary nature of her transaction and the fact that the SIM was solely for personal internet use.
She recounted the disbelief and fear she felt during the arrest, realizing that her routine business operations had unexpectedly placed her at the center of a criminal investigation.
Despite her attempts to convince the authorities of her innocence, the officers continued to press their claims, creating a tense and stressful situation.
Ibrahim’s experience highlights the potential risks that can arise from misunderstandings or misidentifications in the context of personal and business communications.
The incident caused significant disruption to her personal and professional life, as she faced the frightening possibility of imprisonment for a crime she did not commit.
She said, “They claimed the line was used for kidnapping, ₦50m ransom was collected, and the victim was still killed. I told them I bought the SIM in April 2025, while the incident happened in January 2024.”
