According to Independent Nigeria, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent broadcast, addressing the grievances of protesters. According to Atiku, the address failed to effectively respond to the concerns raised by the public regarding the administration’s handling of various national issues.
Atiku, through a statement released by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, expressed disappointment in the content and tone of President Tinubu’s speech. He argued that the President’s message did not align with the expectations of the citizens, who have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the government’s policies. Atiku emphasized that the current economic difficulties facing the country are a direct consequence of the Tinubu administration’s inconsistent and experimental policy decisions.
In his remarks, Atiku pointed out that the President did not address key demands made by the protesters. These demands include halting the purchase of new aircraft for the President, reducing the size of the government’s cabinet, and eliminating the office of the First Lady, which has been criticized for incurring unnecessary expenses. Atiku argued that these measures, if implemented, could demonstrate a genuine commitment to austerity and accountability.
The former Vice President further criticized the government for its apparent indifference to the public’s call for more responsible governance. He noted that the administration’s failure to acknowledge and act upon the protesters’ demands reflects a broader disregard for the concerns of the populace. Atiku believes that the government’s priorities are misplaced, focusing more on maintaining a luxurious lifestyle for the elite rather than addressing the pressing needs of ordinary citizens.
Atiku’s statement highlighted the growing discontent among Nigerians, who are struggling with economic challenges exacerbated by what he described as the government’s trial-and-error approach. He suggested that the administration’s policies have not only failed to alleviate the nation’s problems but have also contributed to worsening the economic situation. The former Vice President called for a more thoughtful and deliberate approach to governance, one that prioritizes the welfare of the people over the interests of a few.
He said: “But alas, no such announcements were made. The President ignored the protesters’ demands, such as suspending the purchase of aircraft for the President, downsizing his bloated cabinet, or even eliminating the costly and burdensome office of the First Lady, who has been indulging in extravagant trips at the nation’s expense.”….Seē _ Morē
