The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has denied any involvement in the display of Russian flags during recent protests across the country. This is according to Vanguard Newspaper.
In a statement, the embassy clarified that neither the Russian government nor its officials were connected to the trend of flying national flags during the protests. The embassy emphasized that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria, and respects Nigerian democracy.
However, the Nigerian military has declared that individuals displaying Russian flags during protests are committing treason and will be prosecuted. Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa stated that this is a treasonable offense and will be treated as such.
Additionally, the Nigerian Police Force has arrested 31 persons for producing and distributing Russian flags and calling for anarchy, describing their actions as treasonous.
The protests, which have taken place in several northern states, have seen individuals flying Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
