5 Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma, $27,100
One can find the Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma plant in southern Thailand and some regions of Malaysia. The deep green, wide leaves are patterned like cut paper.
Variegated leaves are a feature of some exceptionally rare Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma specimens. These white spots serve as an accent to the primary color of the leaves. In June of 2021, a New Zealand vendor found one of these plants listed on the website Trade Me. When all was said and done, the asking price was $27,100.
4. $42,000 for the Adansonii Variegata
The Adansonii Variegata is a popular choice for a luxurious indoor plant due to its large, glossy foliage. Despite the fact that the majority of these plants are unassuming, all-green houseplants, a few of them have significant holes between the white and green coloring, making them look like Swiss cheese. “fenestration” is the term for this ever-expanding pattern. Possessors of this trait are greatly sought after among Adansonii Variegata.
Even a root cutting from a confirmed Adansonii Variegata can be worth hundreds of dollars. Etsy recently saw the sale of one of its beautiful examples for $38,000.
3. $317,000. Shenzhen Nongke Orchid.
Orchids are highly desirable as decorative plants because of their uniqueness, rarity, and soft beauty. The Shenzhen Nongke Orchid is the most expensive in the world despite being a man-made novelty. Architectural researchers from China’s Shenzhen University spent nearly a decade developing it in a laboratory setting.
As the blossoms of this exceptionally rare orchid only open once every five years, their enormous worth is reflected in this fact. In 2005, an anonymous buyer paid the Chinese Yuan equivalent of $217,000 for a single Shenzhen Nongke Orchid, making it the most expensive flower ever sold.
The plant’s therapeutic characteristics, including Vitamin E and Vitamin C, make it useful as a supplementary treatment for those with specific types of eye problems.
2. Bonsai Pine, Second Place, $1,300,000
Growing miniature versions of full-size trees is called bonsai, an old art form. When sculpted skillfully, these trees take on the appearance of towering landmarks despite being just a few feet tall. It is not uncommon for Bonsai trees to fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction.
On the second day of the Asia-Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention & Exhibition, the tree was sold by Seiji Morimae’s S-CUBE organization.
The Kadupul Flower, Number One: Inestimable
Despite the plant’s high price, no Kadupul Flower has ever been successfully sold.
In fact, it is the national flower of Sri Lanka, the only country in the world where you may find this flower. Unfortunately, once the plant is picked, it quickly rots, rendering it useless for collection or sale.
All but the most meticulously chosen and maintained flowers wither and die in their tiny plot of soil soon after blossoming. Unless they fly to Sri Lanka and buy the outrageously costly perfume manufactured from the Kadupul flower, people from other countries would never get a chance to witness this floral phenomena in person.
