A man by the name Njenga tells the story of how he got into trouble and ended up serving seven years in prison because of associating himself with a friend who was a thief.
James who currently lives in Mombasa was born in Nairobi Kangemi due to financial problems he only reached class three after which he ended up begging in the streets of Westlands where he used to go everyday .
He says that his father was a drunkard and any time he came home drunk he used to be violent to his mother and also him this made him to totally get into street life at the age of 13 and never used to go home.
In the streets he met a friend called Munyao who connected him to travelling to Mombasa he says that life in Mombasa was better than in Nairobi since there were places he could get free food .When Munyao insisted on coming back to Nairobi,James said he would stay.
There happened to be a person who was helping street kids and he agreed to let Munyao work for him but after sometime he insisted that everyone who he had employed needed to have a national identity card inorder to continue.
James went home to Nairobi and got a copy of the parents I’d then came back to Mombasa and got his Id processed unfortunately it did not last a week before someone stole James gave up on it.
He was however fortunate enough to get another job at a carwash where he also introduced his Friend Bernard Muli little did he know what this would bring him.
They used to work in the carwash till 9 pm after which everyone would now go do their own things it happened that after work Bernard would go to Kasa B together with other people where they would rob people walking.
One day during lunch time as they were walking to where they used to it they were stormed by police and were both handcuffed although the complainer pointed out to Bernard ,James was not let free.
They were taken to prison and their fingerprints taken all along James was trying to ask Muli what he had actually done but Muli had refused to tell him rather he told him to wait for court day.
James says that in the morning he decided to ask the police what the statement written was saying they were guilty of and he was told it was robbery with violence this shocked James because he had never robbed anyone but would always hustle to get his money.
In court both denied the charges pressed and hence were taken to remand in Shimo La Tewa where they stayed for 2 years the case became difficult for them and they were given a 5 years sentence.
James said prison wasn’t easy mostly considering that he was serving a sentence over something he did not do some good Samaritans including his first employer would however check on him.
The two finished their sentence in 2015 and luckily the person who had employed James in the car wash agreed to take him back but refused to take Bernard.
Bernard went back into robbery which became the end of him as he was hit by shock while trying to steal, since no one knew where he had come from he was buried by the Municipal.
James says that although he forgave him it still hurts him that he went to prison over something he didn’t do his advise to people is to be very watchful of the friendships they create…….See More
