The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to step in again and resolve the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, as reported by PUNCH.
The group warned that if the tensions continue, the consequences could affect the entire country.
The crisis worsened after the Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s ruling that stopped the state’s financial allocation.
The court ruled that funds would not be released until a valid House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule as Speaker, was in place.
Following the judgment, Ijaw groups, including the Ijaw National Congress and the Ijaw Youths Council, voiced strong opposition.
They warned that any attempt to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara could lead to instability in the Niger Delta and disrupt oil production in the region.
The NCSCN expressed concerns over statements and actions that could incite violence or undermine democratic processes in Rivers.
The council criticized the stance of the Ijaw Youth Congress and urged them to seek legal and constitutional means to address their dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision.
The group also appealed to President Tinubu to continue his mediation efforts, stating that previous attempts had not fully resolved the crisis.
It stressed the need for peace and stability in Rivers, warning that unrest in the state could have serious national consequences.
Governor Fubara was advised to remain calm and not take preemptive actions in response to potential impeachment moves.
The NCSCN also called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to put aside their differences and work with the executive for the greater good of the state.
The council stated that unity among lawmakers and the governor was essential to prevent further political crisis.
“NCSCN is totally against any utterance or act that could undermine the rule of law, peace, stability, and democratic Integrity of Rivers State,” they said.
